About the position

The Director of Machine Learning at LiquidPiston, Inc. is responsible for developing and implementing machine learning solutions to enhance the design of rotary internal combustion engines. This role involves creating a roadmap for machine learning applications, managing multiple projects, and collaborating closely with the engineering team, including the CEO and CTO. The position requires a strong background in data science and engineering, with a focus on optimizing system performance through advanced analytics and modeling techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a roadmap for applications of machine learning to engine design.
  • Create and modify machine learning models related to engines, generators, hybrid power systems, UAVs, etc.
  • Analyze and validate modeling results with experimental data.
  • Recommend changes to optimize system performance.
  • Document results verbally and through formal/informal written reports.
  • Collaborate and respond to requests from the Engineering team, including commonly from the CEO and CTO.
  • Manage time and resources between multiple projects.
  • Participate in weekly technical meetings, summarizing key accomplishments and plans.
  • Use Python, R, and/or Matlab as primary modeling tools.
  • Select and act as a primary technical contact for any outsourced modeling work.
  • Maintain a spirited, open-minded personality and can-do attitude during the course of often challenging R&D projects.

Requirements

  • Ph.D in Computer Science with BS/Masters in Data Science & Analytics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, etc.
  • Experience using advanced analytics tools to combine large datasets and analyze them in big data environments, such as ADL, AWS, Snowflake, etc.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in scientific computing/data science using numerical methods, statistical analysis and optimization techniques.
  • Coding experience is a must.
  • Fundamental understanding of Physics and Thermodynamics.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, model, and optimize physical systems.
  • Ability to self-direct and independently solve problems, including thinking outside the box.
  • Ability to learn, find, and learn from technical papers/journals.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience or interest in rotary, piston, turbine engines.
  • Experience with setting up and maintaining your own IT and data systems, including kubernetes, ZFS, Docker, engineering software license management, etc.
  • Experience developing GUIs.
  • Experience working back and forth between simulation and real-world testing.
  • Proposal writing skills.
  • Experience working around a machine shop/prototype manufacturing/R&D environment.
  • Experience supporting novel product development.
  • Experience with 3D modeling (Solidworks) and other common mechanical engineering simulation tools (ANSYS, GT Suite).
