About the position

The Director of Marketing and Communications at Safari Club International (SCI) is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing all marketing and communications functions within the organization. This position is based in San Antonio, TX, and requires a strong commitment to the mission of SCI, which is dedicated to protecting the right to hunt and promoting wildlife conservation. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of SCI's current programs and a passion for hunter's rights, as well as a commitment to ethical wildlife management. The Director will manage both internal and external communications, ensuring that SCI maintains a robust presence across various communication channels and marketing platforms. In this role, the Director will recommend policies and strategies related to marketing and communications, helping to establish and implement comprehensive programs that align with SCI's strategic goals. This includes overseeing the online SCI store and other e-commerce initiatives aimed at maximizing revenue production. The Director will deploy various communication techniques, including email, blogs, social media, and multimedia content, to effectively communicate SCI's advocacy efforts and enhance its impact within the hunting community. The position also involves close coordination with all SCI departments and the communications functions of the SCI Foundation. The Director will develop and implement communication policies and strategies, leveraging knowledge of the hunting community to ensure clear and timely communications that promote wildlife conservation and protect the freedom to hunt. Additionally, the Director will manage a departmental budget, oversee support staff, and engage in employee development and performance management, fostering an open communications culture within the team. Regular attendance at meetings, conventions, and trade shows is also a key aspect of this role, with travel requirements of up to 25%.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all internal and external communications for SCI.
  • Develop and implement marketing and communications policies and strategies.
  • Ensure a strong presence on relevant communications channels and marketing platforms.
  • Coordinate closely with all SCI departments and the SCI Foundation's communications functions.
  • Manage the online SCI store and other e-commerce initiatives to enhance revenue production.
  • Deploy various communication techniques, including email, blogs, social media, and multimedia content.
  • Build and manage a departmental budget and track the effectiveness of communications.
  • Lead the utilization of contractors for communications, advertising, public relations, and marketing.
  • Develop and maintain rapid response and crisis management communication capabilities.
  • Manage support staff, including hiring, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Conduct regular team meetings and communicate departmental updates.
  • Engage in succession planning to ensure continuity of capabilities within the department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, marketing, or public relations.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in communications, public relations, or marketing.
  • Previous experience in supervising or managing staff.
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams.
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must demonstrate experience in hunting and an understanding of issues facing hunting today.

  • Experience with international hunting preferred.
