About the position

The Director of Marketing, Public Relations, and Communications at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) is a pivotal role responsible for enhancing the visibility and reputation of the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM). This position involves complex and highly advanced managerial work, providing strategic direction and guidance in all communications, marketing, and public relations efforts for the college. The director will develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications plan that effectively promotes the mission, programs, and initiatives of SHSU-COM to both internal and external stakeholders. This includes creating and managing a variety of marketing materials across digital, print, and social media platforms, as well as overseeing the college's website and other communication channels. In this role, the director will supervise a team, ensuring that all marketing campaigns are executed effectively and align with the university's branding and communication standards. The position requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster a collaborative work environment. The director will also be responsible for media relations, including proactive outreach to journalists and managing responses to media inquiries. Additionally, the role involves monitoring media coverage and providing regular updates to leadership, as well as producing reports such as a comprehensive annual report for the COM. The director will work closely with various university departments, including academic affairs, enrollment services, and alumni relations, to ensure cohesive messaging and strategic alignment across all communications. This position may require some after-hours and weekend commitments, reflecting the dynamic nature of the role and the need for flexibility in managing various projects and initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive marketing and communication strategies for SHSU-COM.
  • Direct marketing, public relations, and communications efforts for all COM programs and initiatives.
  • Supervise and direct team projects involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Manage marketing campaigns across multiple platforms.
  • Compose articles and work with media outlets to highlight the COM's positive impact.
  • Direct all aspects of media relations, including proactive pitching and responding to inquiries.
  • Ensure consistent messaging internally and externally to enhance SHSU-COM's visibility.
  • Create campaigns to increase awareness and foster community engagement.
  • Collaborate with SHSU Integrated Marketing and Communications to ensure compliance with branding standards.
  • Write, edit, and review content for publications, advertisements, and social media posts.
  • Collect information from stakeholders to design and distribute e-newsletters to the COM community.
  • Focus on public relations and marketing to increase the number of physicians serving as preceptors for student doctors.
  • Create advertisements and marketing materials for COM events and assist with publicizing events.
  • Write and submit stories for relevant medical associations' publications.
  • Manage the design and development of the SHSU-COM website and maintain web content.
  • Conduct research and interviews to produce content for external audiences.
  • Develop and implement a strategic marketing plan for the SHSU Physicians Clinic.
  • Create and order branded promotional materials and participate in conferences.
  • Produce advertisements to recruit new faculty, staff, and preceptors.
  • Monitor media coverage of SHSU-COM and provide updates to leadership.
  • Create reports including a comprehensive annual report for the COM.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Mass Communications, Journalism, Public Relations/Advertising, or a related field.
  • Master's degree in a related field preferred.
  • Five (5) years of professional experience in writing, marketing, communications, social media, or public relations.
  • Experience in a state institution of higher education or a patient care environment preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years in a management or leadership role with supervisory experience.
  • Familiarity with third-party online blog tools, online marketing tools, direct mail, email marketing, and segmentation programs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement successful marketing and communication strategies.
