The Director of Marketing, Public Relations, and Communications at Sam Houston State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU COM) plays a pivotal role in enhancing the visibility and image of the college. This position involves performing complex and highly advanced managerial work, providing direction and guidance in communications, marketing, and public relations efforts. The director is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic marketing and communications plan that effectively promotes the mission, programs, and initiatives of SHSU COM to both internal and external stakeholders. This includes creating and managing a variety of marketing materials across digital, print, and social media platforms, as well as overseeing the college's website and other communication channels. In this role, the director will supervise and direct team projects that involve multiple stakeholders, ensuring that marketing campaigns are executed across various platforms. The position requires composing articles that highlight the college's achievements and working with media outlets to share the positive impact of the institution. The director will also manage all aspects of media relations, including proactive pitching, responding to inquiries, and cultivating relationships with journalists. Consistent messaging is crucial, and the director will work closely with the SHSU Integrated Marketing and Communications team to ensure compliance with branding standards and policies. Additionally, the director will focus on public relations and marketing strategies aimed at increasing the number of physicians serving as preceptors for student doctors, thereby enhancing the college's profile in the region. The role involves creating advertisements and marketing materials for events, managing the design and development of the SHSU-COM website, and producing content for various media outlets. The director will also be responsible for monitoring media coverage and providing regular updates to leadership, as well as producing comprehensive reports, including an annual report for the college. This position requires strong interpersonal skills, exceptional verbal and written communication abilities, and a proven track record in developing successful marketing and communication strategies within a complex organization.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive marketing and communication strategies to promote SHSU-COM's mission, programs, and initiatives.
  • Direct marketing, public relations, and communications efforts for all COM programs and initiatives.
  • Supervise and direct team projects involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Manage marketing campaigns across multiple platforms.
  • Compose articles highlighting the COM and work with media outlets to share the institution's positive impact.
  • Direct all aspects of media relations, including proactive pitching and responding to media inquiries.
  • Ensure consistent messaging internally and externally to enhance SHSU-COM's visibility.
  • Create campaigns to increase awareness and foster community engagement.
  • Collaborate with SHSU Integrated Marketing and Communications to ensure compliance with branding standards.
  • Write, edit, and critically review content for publications, advertisements, web pages, and social media posts.
  • Collect information and data from stakeholders to design and distribute e-newsletters to the COM community.
  • Focus on public relations and marketing to increase the number of physicians serving as preceptors for student doctors.
  • Create advertisements and marketing materials for COM events and assist with publicizing events.
  • Write and submit stories for relevant medical associations' publications.
  • Manage the design and development of the SHSU-COM website and maintain web content.
  • Conduct research and interviews to produce content for external audiences.
  • Develop and implement a strategic marketing plan for the SHSU Physicians Clinic to increase revenue.
  • Create and order branded promotional materials and participate in conferences with marketing booths.
  • Produce advertisements to recruit new faculty, staff, and preceptors.
  • Monitor media coverage of SHSU-COM and provide updates to leadership.
  • Create comprehensive reports, including an annual report for the COM.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Mass Communications, Journalism, Public Relations/Advertising, or a related field.
  • Master's degree in a related field preferred.
  • Five (5) years of professional experience in writing, marketing, communications, social media, or public relations.
  • Preferred experience in a state institution of higher education or a patient care environment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years in a management or leadership role with supervisory experience.
  • Experience in project oversight and strategic planning.
  • Familiarity with third-party online blog tools, online marketing tools, direct mail, email marketing, and segmentation programs.

  • Knowledge of AP Style guidelines, digital marketing tools, and content management systems.
  • Direct knowledge of organic copy optimization via social media.
  • In-depth knowledge of social media platforms and their respective participants.
