About the position

The Director of Network Operations at the University of Cincinnati is responsible for overseeing the 24x7 availability, performance, and security of the University's network and voice services. This role involves analyzing the network and recommending changes or upgrades, ensuring compliance with best practices, and promoting continuous improvement for operations, budget management, and capacity planning. The Director will oversee technical resources and vendor management, ensuring that the network operations and support teams are effectively managed and supported. In this position, the Director will oversee the planning, execution, and day-to-day operations for the University's network operations, which includes LAN, WAN, WLAN, DNS/DHCP, VPN, AWS/Azure, Voice, Pinnacle, and structured cabling. Collaboration with the Office of Information Security is essential to ensure the security and compliance of the university's network by implementing policies, tools, monitoring, and best practices to prevent unauthorized access and misuse. The Director will provide technical guidance to senior management regarding new technologies based on the organization’s current and future needs, overseeing the implementation and adoption of services. They will define and lead troubleshooting processes during and outside of normal business hours and participate in change management and root cause analysis. Working closely with other teams, the Director will facilitate collaboration to implement and improve services, support, and process improvement across the University. Additionally, the Director will design, develop, implement, and coordinate systems, policies, and procedures, oversee the department budget, and assist in annual budget planning and analysis. They will manage multiple moderate to complex projects, develop project plans, coordinate resources, communicate changes, and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget. The Director will also serve as an expert resource to others, interface with vendors and service providers, and may provide direct or indirect supervision to staff.

Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple moderate to complex projects and ensure timely completion.
  • Serve as an expert resource to others and serve on committees and project teams.
  • Interface and manage the relationship with vendors and service providers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • Seven (7) years of advanced level experience working with networking hardware and software.
  • Five (5) years of supervision and management experience of a technical network management team of at least 15 technicians.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and improving customer service through ITSM tools.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of network service delivery including availability, reliability, and security.
  • Experience in managing technical projects through a project management process.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in managing a complex budget.

Nice-to-haves

  • CCNA, CCNP, CCIE, or related industry certifications.
  • Expert level knowledge in systems/platforms/technologies currently used by the department.
  • Degree or training in business administration or management.
  • Experience in supporting or delivering technology services in Higher Education.
