About the position

The Director of Nursing-Operations and Clinical Innovation at DCH Health System plays a pivotal role in managing the operations of the Office of the Vice President for Patient Care and Chief Nurse. This position is under the general direction of the Vice President for Patient Care and Chief Nurse, and the incumbent is responsible for overseeing various programs and projects aimed at enhancing operational efficiency within the healthcare setting. The Director will design, implement, and evaluate management systems that support the overall goals of the organization, ensuring that both short-term and long-term strategies are effectively developed and executed. In this role, the Director will be accountable for planning, coordinating, and monitoring the annual budgets for the Division of Patient Care Services, as well as spearheading performance improvement initiatives. The position requires a strong focus on administrative support and direction for the Office of the Vice President for Patient Care and Chief Nurse, ensuring that all operations align with the organization's standards and objectives. The Director will analyze proposals presented to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), making informed recommendations and action plans. They will also coordinate the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Finance Department and Patient Care Services Division Directors and Managers, while monitoring compliance with the established budget. Evaluating current departmental and hospital systems is crucial, as the Director will focus on healthcare trends and continuous quality improvement initiatives, developing proposals for necessary changes. Additionally, the Director will manage Nursing Resource Management, which includes overseeing the nursing float pool, staffing, patient accommodations, and administrative supervisors. They will assist the CNO in developing and implementing strategies, policies, and programs that enhance patient care services. The role also involves coordinating initiatives related to performance improvement, patient flow, and length of stay activities, ensuring that all programs and projects are effectively managed and evaluated for their impact on departmental operations. The Director will prepare reports and proposals for the CNO, represent the CNO on various committees and project teams, and take operational responsibility for designated projects. Professional development is also a key aspect of this role, as the Director is expected to identify their learning needs and goals and create a plan to address them. Maintaining performance standards related to patient and employee satisfaction, as well as financial metrics, is essential for success in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes proposals brought forth to the CNO, making recommendations and plans of action.
  • Plans and coordinates annual budgeting process with Finance Department and with Patient Care Services Division Directors and Managers.
  • Monitors annual budget compliance for Patient Care Services Administration and for the Patient Care Services Division.
  • Evaluates current departmental and hospital systems, focusing on trends in health care and continuous quality improvement initiatives; develops proposals for change including recommendations and plans of action.
  • Responsible for the areas of Nursing Resource Management including: Nursing float pool, Staffing, Patient Accommodations, Escort, DACU and the Administrative Supervisors.
  • Assists the CNO with the development and implementation of short and long-term strategies, policies, procedures, practices and programs.
  • Coordinates initiatives and monitors Division Performance Improvement activity, patient flow and length of stay (LOS) activities.
  • Manages programs and/or projects to enhance department operations and plans, implements and evaluates its effectiveness.
  • Participates in the design, implementation and evaluation of defined programs to promote attainment of department/service goals.
  • Identifies and recommends fiscal, material and human resource requirements for specific initiatives.
  • Oversees Nursing Operations strategic and operating Plan.
  • Prepares written reports and/or proposals for the CNO.
  • Facilitates the preparation of materials, by Patient Care Services' leadership and staff, for presentation to the Vice President for Patient Care.
  • Represents the CNO on committees, special task forces, project teams as designated; assumes operational responsibility for specific projects and/or activities as designated.
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional development; identifies learning needs and goals, and designs a plan to meet them.
  • Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Current RN license in the state of Alabama.
  • Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare operations and management principles.
  • Experience in budget management and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex data and make informed decisions.

Nice-to-haves
