About the position

Adams State University (ASU), a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) located in rural southern Colorado, is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic educator to serve as the Director of Operations within the Prison Education Programs (PEP). This full-time position is grounded in the belief that access to higher education can transform the lives of incarcerated students. The PEP unit is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and the university encourages applications from diverse candidates who are passionate about advocating for and serving incarcerated students. The Director of Operations will report to the Executive Director of Extended Studies and will work collaboratively with ASU staff, academic departments, and faculty to oversee all operational functions of the Prison Education Program. This role includes developing the strategic direction of the program alongside the PEP Director, hiring and supervising staff and faculty, managing course scheduling, registration, budgeting, and general operations. The Director will also support the delivery of high-quality print-based courses and ensure exceptional customer care for traditional, non-traditional, veterans, and incarcerated students. The Director of Operations will provide leadership and supervision of the Prison Education Program, implementing Pell for incarcerated students by interpreting U.S. Department of Education financial aid regulations and establishing procedures to award aid in conjunction with the Financial Aid Office. Responsibilities include overseeing budgets, revenue, and expenses related to program delivery, ensuring efficient registration procedures, addressing student and advocate concerns, investigating allegations of academic dishonesty, and managing other operational tasks. The Director will develop policies and procedures that support student success, streamline admission and registration processes, and promote academic integrity. Additionally, the role involves assessing student needs, retention, and graduation rates, and collaborating with academic departments to recruit qualified faculty and develop high-quality courses. This position requires a commitment to principles of diversity and inclusion, as well as the ability to treat others with respect and civility. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in communication, a passion for serving underserved students, and the ability to manage budgets and engage in planning. The Director will supervise classified staff and faculty, ensuring effective operations within the Prison Education Program and contributing to the overall mission of Adams State University.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and supervision of the Prison Education Program (PEP).
  • Implement Pell for incarcerated students by interpreting U.S. Department of Education financial aid regulations.
  • Establish procedures to award aid to incarcerated students in conjunction with the Financial Aid Office.
  • Oversee budgets, revenue, and expenses related to program delivery.
  • Ensure efficient registration procedures and customer service to all student populations.
  • Address student and advocate concerns and investigate allegations of academic dishonesty.
  • Develop policies and procedures that support student success in print-based programs, especially for incarcerated students.
  • Streamline the admission, registration, and course completion processes.
  • Promote academic integrity of all courses.
  • Assess students' needs for service delivery and external agency referrals as needed.
  • Evaluate retention and graduation/completion rates for degree-seeking students in the Prison Education Program.
  • Collaborate with academic departments to recruit and hire qualified faculty committed to serving incarcerated students.
  • Develop, approve, and offer high-quality courses and programs in collaboration with academic departments.
  • Supervise and evaluate classified staff and faculty teaching print-based correspondence programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience in a relevant higher education environment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication.
