About the position

The Director of Operations at Sutter Independent Physicians is a pivotal role responsible for the comprehensive planning, direction, monitoring, coordination, control, and evaluation of operations and activities within the organization. This position requires a collaborative approach, working closely with Regional and System leadership to ensure seamless operations and strategic growth. The Director will evaluate new business opportunities in partnership with the CEO and CMO, developing both long-term and short-term operational plans that align with staffing, budgetary constraints, and policy development. In this role, the Director will provide both administrative and clinical leadership for assigned outpatient and clinic service lines within a specific affiliate or geographic area. The Director is tasked with establishing and implementing goals, standards, and practices that support patient care initiatives, ensuring the delivery of high-value quality care and exceptional patient experiences. Building strong partnerships with physicians, medical staff, and Sutter Health leaders is essential to facilitate collaboration on initiatives, resolve operational challenges, and improve processes. The Director will work with senior leadership to develop and establish strategic plans that align with the overall goals and initiatives of the system, operating unit, or affiliate. This includes setting priorities, allocating resources, and developing policies and procedures that ensure safe, consistent, and effective patient care. The position is also responsible for maintaining knowledge of all aspects of the practice management environment, including regulatory requirements and quality improvement initiatives, to drive operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, monitor, coordinate, control, and evaluate the operations and activities of Sutter Independent Physicians.
  • Collaborate with Regional and System leadership to ensure seamless operations and strategic growth.
  • Evaluate new business opportunities in collaboration with the CEO and CMO.
  • Develop long and short-term operational plans relative to staffing, budget, and policy development.
  • Provide administrative and clinical leadership for assigned outpatient/clinic service lines.
  • Establish and implement goals, standards, and practices that guide and support patient care initiatives.
  • Foster partnerships with physicians, medical staff, and Sutter Health leaders to facilitate collaboration and resolve operational challenges.
  • Work with senior leadership to develop and establish strategic plans that complement system goals and initiatives.
  • Set priorities and allocate resources to align with business objectives and annual plans.
  • Develop and establish the direction of policies and procedures for effective patient care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Administration, Management, or a related field, or equivalent experience accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • 12 years of recent relevant experience in healthcare operations or management.
  • Knowledge of practice management environment, including scope of practice issues and care center operations.
  • Familiarity with state, regulatory, CMS, and accrediting requirements.
  • Experience in implementing and leading quality improvement programs and initiatives.
  • Understanding of healthcare systems, billing processes, clinical procedures, budget preparation, and staffing models.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with physicians and management.
  • Experience with Lean production in ambulatory healthcare is desired.
  • Strong business and analytical skills, including financial planning and assessment.
  • Proficient in both written and verbal communication.
