About the position

The Director of Religious Exploration (DRE) is responsible for overseeing and managing the Religious Exploration Program for children and youth from birth to 18 years of age within a progressive Unitarian Universalist community. This role involves planning and administering a comprehensive program that nurtures spiritual and religious growth while fostering a strong UU identity. The DRE collaborates with the minister and worship team to create intergenerational worship experiences and ensures compliance with safe congregation policies.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the minister and worship team to provide intergenerational worship experiences.
  • Create and present Time For All Ages content during non-intergenerational worship services at the minister's request.
  • Train and oversee volunteers in safe congregation policies and practices and ensure compliance.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, bi-monthly worship team meetings, and annual worship and staff retreats.
  • Maintain accurate administrative records, including the RE calendar and all enrolled families in our database.
  • Track and manage the RE budget over the course of the year.
  • Regularly communicate RE planning and programming with the minister, staff, teachers, volunteers, parents, and congregation.
  • Welcome new families.
  • Pursue professional development and connect with RE colleagues from other congregations in the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and LREDA.
  • Supervise childcare workers and the RE Assistant.
  • Supervise and support the members of the RE Council with their portfolios.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree or BS/BA in child development, teaching, or an associated program.
  • Experience working with children and families.
  • Teaching experience (volunteer or professional).
  • Familiarity with teaching Unitarian Universalism (i.e., polity, history, and theology).
  • Sunday availability (off one Sunday per month).
  • Must pass a background check.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with children who have special needs.
  • Experience in religious education in a tolerant religious congregation.
  • Familiarity with UU curricula for children and youth and evolving UU faith formation.
