About the position

The Director of Research Compliance at Caltech is responsible for overseeing the Research Compliance Program, ensuring that research activities adhere to the highest standards of integrity and comply with all relevant regulations. This role involves managing various institutional committees, providing strategic direction, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders to maintain compliance and promote responsible research practices.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and oversees the activities of the Institute research regulatory committees (IRB, IBC, IACUC, HESC, RSC) and the Institute Controlled Substances Program.
  • Supervises the IACUC, IRB/HESC, and IBC/RSC/Research Training Research Compliance Administrators.
  • Coordinates with the Associate Vice Provost for Research Policy and Compliance to develop and implement institutional policies and procedures.
  • Guides the Institutional Official for research committees and aids in preparing reports to oversight agencies.
  • Oversees implementation of the electronic-based record system for research regulatory committees and training records.
  • Works with various institutional stakeholders to ensure compliance with regulations regarding research with human participants, animals, and controlled substances.
  • Establishes and oversees an Institutional research training program, coordinating workshops and seminars.
  • Responsible for decisions on hiring, promotions, salary changes, training, and performance evaluations of subordinate staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience in a scientific, federal-funded organization.
  • Advanced understanding of operational requirements related to the management of IRB, IACUC, IBC, and HESC in a university setting.
  • Knowledge of U.S. federal and California state research regulations regarding human and animal subjects, recombinant DNA, and responsible conduct of research.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced organizational skills and independent decision-making ability.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion and good judgment.
  • Ability to supervise staff.
