About the position

The Director of Safety & Compliance at Oak Harbor Freight Lines is responsible for fostering a safety-first culture within the organization. This role involves leading a team of Safety Supervisors and collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance safety initiatives and compliance with regulations. The Director will also serve as the primary contact for trucking associations and will be instrumental in identifying safety trends and implementing improvements across the company.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor a risk-based assessment of organizational safety.
  • Identify safety and compliance goals for the organization.
  • Assess leadership and behavioral gaps in safety initiatives and recommend solutions.
  • Represent the organization at trucking association events.
  • Provide monthly reports with key performance indicators to the Leadership Team.
  • Lead and coach Regional Supervisors and administrative support staff.
  • Cultivate a safety leadership culture throughout the organization.
  • Engage with the Executive Team on safety direction and improvements.
  • Act as the main contact for Hazardous Material concerns.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal safety regulations.
  • Monitor hours of service records for accuracy and compliance.
  • Oversee the accident review process and ensure timely reporting and management of incidents.
  • Provide accident and injury data for HVP scoring.
  • Develop materials for monthly safety topics based on KPI trends.
  • Review and recommend changes to the Driver Training program content.
  • Oversee Driver Trainer Requirements and certification updates.
  • Create accident management and investigation protocols for managers.
  • Establish Safety Committee requirements and monitor compliance.
  • Build a safety review checklist for onsite reviews.
  • Handle escalated public complaints.
  • Support the organization's goals and objectives.
  • Travel as required.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the LTL industry.
  • Experience in a Supervisory role, preferably in a Safety department.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Office software and industry routing and E-Log software.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state safety laws, particularly FMCSR, PHMSA & OSHA standards.
  • Experience with analysis and identification of risk trends, problems, and solutions.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities with little notice.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Ability to analyze, define, diagnose, and resolve problems logically.
  • Ability to develop, coach, and mentor others effectively.
  • Ability to collaborate with team members, including those with opposing views.
  • Strong understanding of safety performance metrics.
  • Ability to plan and execute safety-related events and meetings.
  • Ability to develop and communicate presentations for stakeholders.
