About the position

The Director of Security Operations, Information Security Manager, is responsible for overseeing the Security Operations Bureau within the Chief Information Security Office (CISO) of New York State. This role involves managing security operations activities, providing subject matter expertise, and ensuring optimal protection for Information Technology Services (ITS) and its client agencies. The incumbent will lead a team, communicate with various stakeholders, and act independently while aligning with CISO leadership and ITS strategic direction.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct all activities within the Security Operations bureau.
  • Manage the team responsible for operational security technology and processes, including vulnerability scanning, IDS/IPS, and endpoint security.
  • Serve as an information security expert and evaluate systems for alignment with agency and State information security policies.
  • Supervise staff and monitor progress on major initiatives and projects.
  • Participate in the review and evaluation of new security tools and make recommendations to enhance security posture.
  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration within Security Operations and with peer teams throughout CISO and ITS.
  • Monitor information security industry trends, tools, and techniques.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 15 credit hours in cyber security, information assurance, or information technology.
  • Six years of information technology experience, including five years in information security or assurance and four years at a supervisory level or two years at a managerial level.
  • Certifications in Cyber Defense, Cyber Threat Intelligence, or Information Security Management are preferred.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise IT environments and information security foundations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree with a concentration in Information Security or related field.
  • 5+ years' experience leading a team in related work.
  • 3+ years' experience managing or performing cybersecurity incident response.
