About the position

The Director of Software Engineering at 1910 Genetics is responsible for shaping the technical vision and goals of the software engineering team. This role involves leading day-to-day operations, mentoring junior engineers, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive software development projects. The director will play a crucial role in designing and maintaining a cloud-based platform that supports groundbreaking advancements in drug discovery, leveraging a deep understanding of technology to optimize processes and architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Shape the technical vision and goals of the software engineering team.
  • Lead day-to-day operations of the software engineering team and hold regular 1:1 meetings with engineers.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.
  • Engage with cross-functional teams and provide subject matter and technical expertise for multiple development projects.
  • Design, develop, and maintain a state-of-the-art cloud-based platform for drug discovery.
  • Make decisions on scalable architecture, develop tools and infrastructure, and optimize processes.
  • Communicate project updates on progress, risks, options, barriers, and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Review technical designs and sign off on development plans for key software and machine learning initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field.
  • 10 years as an engineering manager, managing software engineers, product managers, and program managers.
  • 7 years of hands-on experience as an individual contributor writing code and building software products.
  • 7 years of experience building large-scale enterprise software products.
  • 7 years of experience with cloud systems, especially Microsoft Azure.
  • 5 years of software development experience in a healthcare/biotechnology company, high-tech experience is highly desired.
  • Proficiency with Github, Python, Javascript, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, React.
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes) for deploying and scaling applications.
  • Solid background in data engineering, ETL processes, and data modeling for complex scientific datasets.
  • Previous involvement in machine learning and AI projects, with a deep understanding of deploying and managing ML models in production.
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate the needs of the Biology Team to the Software Organization.
