About the position

The Director of Software Engineering at PlayOn! Sports is responsible for building and managing development teams that deliver modern cloud-based software solutions. This role involves collaboration with various departments to ensure high-quality software delivery while adhering to schedules and budgets. The director will also focus on scaling the engineering organization, managing resources, and fostering innovation to maintain a competitive edge.

Responsibilities

  • Scale the engineering organizational structure and execution strategies.
  • Manage large teams across multiple operating units and coordinate with 3rd party offshore teams.
  • Work closely with customer success to provide effective tier 2 and off-hour operational support.
  • Define and track key metrics around development productivity and QA effectiveness.
  • Execute against aggressive project plans and delivery commitments within an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Manage resource allocations, staffing levels, training, hiring, retention, mentoring, team building, and performance reviews across the teams.
  • Lead business planning and budgeting/forecasting discussions with operations and finance teams.
  • Collaborate with the SVP of Engineering and technical leads to architect and develop optimal technical solutions.
  • Adapt quickly to changes in product requirements and delivery schedules to meet business objectives.
  • Research industry trends to leverage emerging technologies as needed.
  • Provide regular updates to the executive team and stakeholders regarding development status, release management, QA, operations, support, and system performance.

Requirements

  • 10+ years overall software development industry experience
  • 5+ years managing engineering teams of Developers, QA, and DevOps
  • 5+ years delivering scalable cloud-based web applications
  • 3+ years working in an AWS environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong familiarity with PlayOn's technology stack: Java, Spring Boot, Angular, PostgreSQL, AWS, Bitbucket
  • Education: BS in Computer Science or Engineering; MS preferred
  • Strong initiative and self-management skills
