About the position

The Director of Sports Marketing and Fan Engagement at Hampton University plays a pivotal role in enhancing the visibility and engagement of the Hampton Pirates Athletics program. Reporting directly to the Assistant Athletic Director for Fan Engagement, Sports Marketing, and Promotions, this position is responsible for the development, coordination, and implementation of various marketing strategies aimed at improving game day experiences, digital marketing efforts, and community outreach initiatives. The Director will work independently to execute these strategies while also collaborating with various external units and coaching staffs to maximize the effectiveness of marketing campaigns. A key focus of this role is to drive student attendance and engagement, as well as to promote membership in the Hampton Pirates Kids Club. The Director will lead marketing initiatives specifically for Men's Basketball, ensuring that ticket sales and game day experiences are optimized to attract and retain fans. This includes developing strategies in conjunction with the Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing to meet attendance and fan development goals. The position also involves assisting in the recruitment, training, and scheduling of graduate assistants and undergraduate marketing staff, ensuring that the team is well-prepared to execute marketing initiatives effectively. In addition to these responsibilities, the Director will manage digital and social media marketing campaigns across various platforms, including the university's website, email newsletters, and social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The role also serves as the primary contact for community outreach requests, which may include mascot appearances and donation requests. The Director is expected to embody the core values of Hampton University, which include integrity, respect, decency, dignity, and responsibility, while also performing other duties as assigned to support the overall mission of the athletics department.

Responsibilities

  • Develop strategy to reach attendance and fan development goals in collaboration with the Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing.
  • Communicate regularly with external units and coaching staffs to maximize collaboration.
  • Lead marketing, game day experience, and ticket sales initiatives for Men's Basketball.
  • Assist in recruiting, training, and scheduling graduate assistants and undergraduate marketing staff.
  • Manage digital and social media marketing campaigns across various platforms.
  • Serve as the primary contact for community outreach requests, including mascot appearances and donation requests.
  • Embody the core values of Hampton University in all professional interactions and initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing or sports management.
  • 4+ years of previous relevant experience in marketing, ticket sales, and/or Fan Experience.
  • Extensive functional knowledge of marketing with specific understanding of sports marketing concepts.
  • Experience collaborating with coaches and serving student-athletes.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Presentation, planning, and project management skills.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations with a history of compliance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience using the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, focusing on Photoshop and Premiere.
