About the position

The Director of State Government Affairs, Policy and Advocacy at Plumbing Manufacturers International (PMI) is responsible for developing and implementing strategic outreach and advocacy plans. This role involves collaboration with state legislators and policymakers to influence legislation and regulations that affect water conservation and plumbing appliance efficiency. The director will work closely with the Advocacy and Government Affairs Committee to establish proactive positions on relevant issues and ensure favorable outcomes for PMI members.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the state government affairs tracking service/consultant to monitor and analyze state administrative, legislative, and regulatory actions impacting PMI members.
  • Develop positions on bills based on member feedback and engage with state legislators to achieve favorable results for PMI's mission.
  • Report progress of state bills to membership during regular Advocacy/Government Affairs teleconferences.
  • Prepare and distribute Advocacy/Government Affairs meeting reports and State Government Affairs Alerts to PMI members as needed.
  • Assist PMI's Federal and California government relations team members as appropriate.
  • Enhance PMI's position as a trusted resource for plumbing industry best practices and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • 5-7 years of experience in state agency roles or similar positions with knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Experience managing consultants or working with them is preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree is required.
  • Experience working with state legislators, lobbyists, and consultants with high diplomacy and effectiveness.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to translate complex concepts into understandable explanations.
  • Ability to work independently and self-motivate in a remote work environment.
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of data management systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of water efficiency and sustainability issues.
  • Experience in the manufacturing industry and understanding of plumbing codes and standards.
