About the position

The Director of Strategic Communications and Proposals at William & Mary is a leadership role within the University Marketing team, responsible for developing and executing strategic communications plans that align with the university's fundraising initiatives and broader goals. This position focuses on high-level projects, particularly those involving donor proposals of $1M or more, and requires collaboration with various stakeholders to enhance the university's engagement and advancement efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic communications for key university priorities related to funding and donor management.
  • Develop strategic communications plans that support fundraising initiatives and align with the university's strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with development officers and advancement staff to create engagement initiatives and donor events.
  • Conduct in-depth research and write strategic communications and proposals for university initiatives.
  • Manage project execution and deliverables for complex proposals involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Foster a culture of belonging and innovation within the communications team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with significant professional experience in communications and public relations or equivalent education and experience.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups.
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles, preferably in higher education.
  • Understanding of best practices in campaign strategy and execution.
  • Ability to research, collect data, and provide analysis on various topics.
  • Excellent project coordination, planning, and leadership skills.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Professional experience in higher education or nonprofit sectors, particularly in university advancement.
  • Experience in strategic roles designing and implementing organization-wide initiatives.
  • Knowledge of William & Mary's strengths and priorities.
  • Understanding of graphic design principles and ability to create presentations.
  • Familiarity with Adobe InCopy, InDesign, PowerPoint, and Photoshop.
