About the position

The Director of Student Communications at Montclair State University is responsible for leading the strategic vision and managerial oversight of the Student Communications Office. This role aims to deliver a cohesive and comprehensive student communications program that aligns with the University brand, ensuring students receive critical information and resources. The Director also manages emergency communications, oversees messaging to parents and families, and supervises a team of professional staff and student workers.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily administration of the Student Communications Office.
  • Develop, schedule, review, and release mass communications targeted at student audiences.
  • Compose and send emergency text message and email communications.
  • Plan and implement the University mascot program and pupscot program.
  • Engage parent and family members through strategic communications efforts.
  • Develop and recommend University, divisional, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Administer and interpret applicable federal and state laws associated with student communication functions.
  • Establish goals and milestones, execute plans, and evaluate divisional operations.
  • Organize, plan, and direct work operations, overseeing staff execution in accordance with performance standards.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and cooperative working relationships with University stakeholders.
  • Represent the division and University at conferences and meetings.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of unit programs and services and plan for continuous improvement.
  • Develop surveys, gather and analyze data, and recommend enhancements to programs.
  • Consolidate messaging and streamline existing processes.
  • Maintain integrity and confidentiality in college and program operations.
  • Compose detailed correspondence and maintain essential records and files.

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field.
  • Minimum of five years of professional work experience in higher education communications or related field.
  • Proficient in website content administration, website design, and social media messaging.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Professional experience with crisis and/or emergency alert communications.
