About the position

Come join The Crucible as our Director of Studio Operations & Facilities for the opportunity to use your arts education and facilities management experience in service to a fantastic arts education nonprofit located in West Oakland! The Director of Studio Operations and Facilities oversees this crucial department and directly manages a full-time Safety Manager, Facilities Coordinator and a team of Studio Operations Technicians. They are responsible for helping to supervise interns, seasonal apprentices, contractors, and volunteers for site-related projects. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Studio Operations and Facilities is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of staff, faculty, students, and community when in and around the facility. The role requires a strong leader who can effectively manage a diverse team and ensure compliance with safety regulations and operational standards. The Director will be expected to develop and implement policies and procedures that promote a safe and efficient working environment. This includes working closely with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies to ensure compliance and obtain required permits for operation. The ideal candidate will have a passion for arts education and a commitment to social justice, as well as the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of individuals from various backgrounds. In addition to overseeing daily operations, the Director will also be responsible for strategic planning and resource allocation to support the growth and sustainability of the studio operations. This position is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the facilities and ensuring that all programs run smoothly and safely. The Director will also play a key role in fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture that aligns with The Crucible's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Studio Operations and Facilities department, managing a team of Safety Manager, Facilities Coordinator, and Studio Operations Technicians.
  • Supervise interns, seasonal apprentices, contractors, and volunteers for site-related projects.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of staff, faculty, students, and community in and around the facility.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for safety and operational efficiency.
  • Work with regulatory agencies to ensure compliance and obtain necessary permits.
  • Manage multiple projects and prioritize workload efficiently under pressure.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive workplace culture.

Requirements

  • At least four (4) years of relevant work experience managing an active art school department or similar.
  • At least three (3) years of experience managing at least three (3) entry and mid-level direct reports.
  • Cal/OSHA 30-Hour Training for General Industry and Forklift Certification or willingness to acquire within thirty (30) days.
  • Experience with industrial arts fabrication equipment and studio safety requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills and comfort with digital tools and research.
  • Self-motivation and adaptability with the ability to prioritize workload efficiently.
  • Proficient with MS-Office (e.g., Word, PPT), Google Workspace tools (e.g., Doc, Sheets, Slides), and Zoom.
  • Valid California Driver's License with an insurable driving record.

Nice-to-haves

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university or other relevant training or applicable experiences.
  • Previous leadership experience in a nonprofit organization, preferably in education, arts or social service organization.
