About the position

The Director of Transit Operations is responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and management of transit services, ensuring they operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulations. This role involves leading a team, managing resources, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement while maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders and ensuring customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all transit operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and customer-focused service delivery.
  • Direct the allocation of resources, including vehicles, operators, and support staff, to optimize service coverage and reliability.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal transportation regulations, including safety standards and operational best practices.
  • Review and update emergency preparedness, risk management, and response plans for transit services.
  • Develop and oversee the transit department's operating budget, ensuring cost-effective service delivery.
  • Monitor financial performance, identifying areas for cost-saving and operational efficiency.
  • Lead and mentor the transit operations team, fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with union-represented employees and participate in collective bargaining.
  • Promote continuous improvement through training programs and performance evaluations.
  • Analyze transit operations to identify productivity improvements and drive strategic planning.
  • Implement goals, objectives, policies, and performance standards for the department.
  • Stay updated on transportation laws and provide impact analysis to executive leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with ADA and other applicable laws.
  • Collaborate across departments as a member of the executive management team.
  • Cultivate relationships with community organizations and stakeholders to enhance service accessibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration/Management, Transportation, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in public transit operations, labor relations, and management.
  • Valid driver's license.
