About the position

The Director of Video Production and Creative Content at Winthrop University plays a pivotal role in enhancing the visibility and engagement of the university's athletic programs through high-quality audio and video content. This position is responsible for creating and streaming content for selected athletic events and activities on the ESPN+ platform, as well as developing engaging content for the division's social media platforms. The director will work closely with the Assistant Athletic Director for Communications to plan and implement internet video streaming throughout the academic year, ensuring that all broadcasts meet ESPN's stringent requirements. In addition to technical responsibilities, the director will coordinate with various stakeholders, including ESPN, the Big South Conference, and the Winthrop Athletic Communications offices, to schedule programming and provide timely updates. A key aspect of this role involves recruiting, training, and scheduling personnel to assist with the setup and operation of equipment for ESPN+ broadcasts. This includes on-air talent and individuals responsible for operating cameras, replay systems, and graphics. The director will also collaborate with the Department of Mass Communication to recruit students for the broadcast team and will be responsible for educating and mentoring student employees and interns to enhance their production skills. Building strong relationships with athletes, coaches, and staff is essential for generating interviews, social content, and features that highlight the university's athletic programs. The director will meet regularly with colleagues to discuss special events and content options, aiming to enhance video, website, and social media content. Additionally, the director will be responsible for archiving and organizing all materials related to the division's broadcasts and digital content, ensuring that all assets are easily accessible for future use.

Responsibilities

  • Create and stream audio/video content of selected athletic events and activities on the ESPN+ platform.
  • Plan and implement internet video streaming of selected athletic events throughout the academic year.
  • Ensure all streams meet ESPN requirements.
  • Coordinate with ESPN, Big South Conference, and Winthrop Athletic Communications offices for scheduling programming.
  • Recruit, train, and schedule personnel for ESPN+ broadcasts, including on-air talent and camera operators.
  • Work with the Department of Mass Communication to recruit students for the broadcast team.
  • Educate and help student employees/interns improve their broadcast/production skills.
  • Build relationships with athletes, coaches, and staff to generate interviews and social content.
  • Meet with colleagues to discuss options for special events and content enhancement.
  • Archive and organize all materials related to the division's broadcasts and digital content.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • One year of experience related to video production and editing.
  • Working knowledge of video engineering principles and practices.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven digital production skills.
  • Ability to run a broadcast on ESPN+ platform with multiple cameras and NewTek switching systems.
  • Ability to build social content campaigns across digital channels including Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Winthropeagles.com.
  • Ability to supervise and manage students in creating content and working broadcasts.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least two years of video production and editing experience.
  • Experience managing website and internet video streaming.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite.
