About the position

The Director of the Office of Communications and Public Liaison at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is a senior public affairs role responsible for leading high-profile communication programs that convey NCI's leadership in cancer research, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. This position involves advising senior leadership, managing a complex communications program, and representing NCI in various public and media interactions.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee a communication program that conveys NCI's leadership role in cancer research, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
  • Advise CEA and NCI Directors on strategic communication and public affairs activities.
  • Provide strategic advice on handling sensitive issues and the release of information for publicized studies and events.
  • Coordinate with NIH, HHS, and the White House on communication issues.
  • Articulate and defend NCI's position to various media and federal agencies.
  • Represent NCI at public meetings and hearings on controversial issues.

Requirements

  • At least one year of qualifying experience equivalent to the GS-14 level in the Federal service or equivalent in the private sector.
  • Experience managing public affairs and communications programs for a public health organization.
  • Experience overseeing the development of communication materials and content.
  • Experience developing plans, strategies, and procedures for communicating information on organizational programs and research results.
  • Experience providing supervision and direction to staff.
