About the position

Suffolk is seeking a Project Engineer for its Career Start program, a two-year rotational initiative designed for recent college graduates eager to embark on a career in construction management. This program allows participants to engage in various rotations, focusing on Estimating, Project Management, and Field Operations, thereby mastering the essential skills required in the construction industry. The program emphasizes leadership exposure and professional development, making it a vital component in cultivating future talent at Suffolk. Notably, a degree in construction management or a related field is not a prerequisite for applicants, broadening the pool of potential candidates. Participants in the Career Start program will begin their roles in July 2025, with potential locations including South Bend, IN; Herndon, VA; Wilkes-Barre, PA; and Boardman, OR. The role involves working closely with experienced professionals, gaining hands-on experience in various aspects of construction management, and contributing to significant projects across diverse sectors such as healthcare, education, and commercial. The Project Engineer will be involved in estimating responsibilities, where they will collaborate with the preconstruction team to create detailed cost forecasts for projects. They will also support field operations by assisting superintendents in managing job site activities and ensuring quality delivery. Additionally, the role includes project management tasks, where the engineer will help coordinate resources, manage budgets, and facilitate communication among trade partners and stakeholders. This multifaceted experience is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful career in construction management.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the preconstruction team to create detailed estimates forecasting each project's total cost.
  • Assist with a Subcontractor database and assembling Bid Documents for pricing.
  • Conduct document take-off, including specification review and preliminary scope development.
  • Organize take-off data using spreadsheets and develop bid clarifications and RFIs.
  • Participate in project walk-throughs and review trade duration with subcontractors for project scheduling.
  • Assist in the development and updating of scope sheets for subcontractor pricing and trade spreadsheets for bids.
  • Support superintendents in daily job site operations, managing trade partners to ensure quality delivery.
  • Gain knowledge of document control and assist in the verification of shop drawings against field conditions.
  • Support quality control processes and assist with site logistics and safety requirements.
  • Assist project managers in overseeing project resources, coordinating trade partners, and managing budgets.

Requirements

  • Recent or soon-to-be college graduate with a bachelor's degree, equivalent military experience, or equivalent construction management experience.
  • Previous co-op or internship experience preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Resourceful with strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, capable of prioritizing and multitasking.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in construction management or related fields through internships or co-ops.
