About the position

The Director, Platform Solutions at CareFirst is a senior leadership role focused on overseeing the Platform Solutions organization, which encompasses cloud and infrastructure engineering, site reliability engineering (SRE), process improvement, technical disaster recovery planning, and operational system hardening. This position requires a high-energy, driven, and experienced servant leader who is proficient in cloud and infrastructure engineering concepts. The role involves creating strategic visions and roadmaps in collaboration with business stakeholders and IT leadership, ensuring that technology and methodologies are effectively applied to translate business requirements into technical solutions. The Director will be responsible for planning and executing departmental strategies to enhance service delivery and organizational performance. This includes overseeing a high-performance system engineering team, leading initiatives in Compute, Networks, Middleware, and Cloud, and supporting Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery efforts. The role also requires coordination with architecture peers from software development and information security teams to achieve quality, efficiency, agility, and security goals. In addition, the Director will contribute to the development and execution of the platform solutions strategy, ensuring alignment with enterprise technology needs and business strategy. This includes managing operational and capital budgets, driving on-time delivery of key projects, and ensuring the delivery of standardized, resilient, reliable, secure, and compliant infrastructure platform capabilities. The position also involves collaboration with engineering teams to integrate effective software CI/CD practices and overseeing all aspects of IT infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, VPN, Firewall, Compute, and Storage Environments.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic vision for new and supported systems by creating roadmaps/value maps in partnership with business stakeholders and IT leadership.
  • Plan and execute the department strategy to improve service delivery and the organization.
  • Oversee a high performance, system engineering team and create an organization that delivers both compelling system vision and implementation.
  • Lead Compute, Networks, Middleware, Cloud, and support Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery teams.
  • Coordinate with architecture peers from software development and information security teams to ensure quality, efficiency, agility, and security goals are achieved.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the platform solutions strategy, ensuring alignment with enterprise technology needs and business strategy.
  • Build organizational talent by creating a learning environment that ensures associates realize their highest potential.
  • Create and execute tactical plans for the engineering and operations teams.
  • Partner and negotiate with strategic vendors in the realization of platform solutions strategy.
  • Participate/support incident management and problem resolution, capacity planning/management, and availability management in partnership with key stakeholders.
  • Develop, manage, and execute operational and capital budgets for the function.
  • Drive on-time delivery and execution of key projects while maintaining high quality and high site uptime.
  • Deliver standardized, resilient, reliable, secure, and compliant infrastructure platform capabilities utilizing automation and infrastructure as code methodologies.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure software CI/CD practices are integrated and effective.
  • Oversee and direct the build, design, implementation, and maintenance for storage, security, network, governance, and failover systems.
  • Oversee and direct all aspects of IT infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, VPN, Firewall, Compute and Storage Environments, Virtualization, monitoring, and alerting.
  • Drive disaster recovery, business continuity, and security audit processes.
  • Implement effective solutions to monitor, measure, and track against critical service level metrics, operational costs, and other financial objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field OR in lieu of education an additional 4 years of relevant work experience is required in addition to the required work experience.
  • 8 years of related professional experience.
  • 3 years of management experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with migration from on-premise infrastructure to cloud platform.
  • Experience managing, coaching, and mentoring Cloud Engineers and Software Engineers.
  • Deep knowledge of cloud platform as a service (IaaS & PaaS) archetype, patterns, and antipatterns.
  • Experience working in cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, GCP, etc. Azure preferred.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of DevOps culture and modern CI/CD best practices.
  • Prior experience as an infrastructure/cloud engineer, software engineer, architect, or technical product owner.
  • Experience in network protocols, network optimization, QoS, SD-WAN, and Network Segmentation.
  • Experience with end-to-end Network, Security, and Telecommunications infrastructure and systems within a large enterprise environment and cloud environments.
