About the position

Voyager Therapeutics is seeking an experienced Director of Protein Science to join our growing Non-Viral Team. The ideal candidate will establish, build, and lead a Protein Science group to support the discovery and development of our brain delivery platform and associated expansion of the biologics pipeline. As a leader in the Research organization, the Director of Protein Science will be responsible for setting a strategy that ensures protein sciences capabilities align with leading technologies to facilitate platform and program advancement. Reporting to the Vice President of Non-Viral Delivery, this role is an opportunity to build a group that will make foundational contributions to Voyager's growth in non-viral delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the development and implementation of a strategy to bring critical infrastructure and capabilities in-house to support protein production, purification, and analytics
  • Lead the design and build out of lab space to meet the expanding needs of the Protein Science group
  • Recruit and mentor a team of highly skilled scientists to design, express, purify and characterize a diversity of protein candidates
  • Contribute to the achievement of critical platform and program goals by delivering high quality proteins and reagents
  • Develop a scalable molecular biology workflow enabling engineering and high-throughput protein production
  • Identify, establish, and manage relationships with contract research organizations (CROs) to provide scalable access to critical expression, purification, and analytic capabilities
  • In collaboration with Data Sciences, develop a structural biology workflow to provide mechanistic insights into candidate molecules
  • Develop and manage timelines, resources and operating budgets

Requirements

  • PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, chemical engineering or related field with 10+ years of industry experience
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with a track record of building and growing cross functional teams
  • A strong background in protein expression across a diversity of platforms, including high-throughput expression systems, is desired
  • Deep expertise in a range of chromatographic separation techniques for antibody and protein purification
  • Extensive expertise in biochemical and biophysical characterization of proteins and protein complexes
  • Prior experience managing contract research organizations (CROs) for the production, purification and characterization of proteins is a plus
  • Outstanding analytical, research and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated with an ability to handle multiple projects, meet deadlines and make decisions
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
