About the position

The Director of Public Affairs, U.S. HIV Communications Issues Management at Gilead Sciences is responsible for developing and executing strategies to protect the company's reputation and manage communications related to HIV therapeutic areas. This role involves collaboration with various internal teams and stakeholders to articulate Gilead's vision, raise awareness of unmet medical needs, and communicate progress in addressing these challenges. The successful candidate will leverage analytical skills to manage complex issues and drive initiatives that align with Gilead's business priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a multi-year issues management plan aligned to U.S. business priorities.
  • Manage complex reputation and business issues with high judgment and professionalism.
  • Identify, analyze, and create action plans for business-critical issues in the HIV therapeutic area.
  • Monitor and track potential threats to Gilead's business and reputation.
  • Develop innovative solutions to complex problems in the HIV therapeutic areas.
  • Drive collaboration and model best practices with Public Affairs colleagues and cross-functional teams.
  • Lead the development of issues management materials, including messaging and Q&As.
  • Spearhead stakeholder research and manage a detailed workplan to assess progress against goals.
  • Consult with cross-functional colleagues to determine appropriate actions for managing potential issues.
  • Engage with senior executives as a trusted advisor.

Requirements

  • BA degree in communications, public health, business, or a science-oriented field with 12+ years of relevant experience, or a master's degree with 10 years of relevant experience.
  • 8-12 years of issues management and healthcare communications experience.
  • Experience in high stakes issues management, crisis communications, and media relations.
  • Experience in an FDA regulated industry, preferably in biopharma.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulations governing communications for publicly traded biopharmaceutical companies.
  • Proven track record of calm under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to drive results in a matrixed environment.
