About the position

As a Director of Software Engineering, Enterprise Artificial Intelligence within the Enterprise Data & Analytics (ED&A) organization at Travelers, you will play a pivotal role in transforming our business and technology capabilities. This position is designed for a strategic and collaborative leader who is passionate about leveraging artificial intelligence to revolutionize the insurance industry. You will be part of a dynamic leadership team, working closely with technologists, data experts, and various stakeholders to drive holistic strategic efforts across the enterprise. Your responsibilities will include leading a team of software engineers, providing technical guidance, and mentoring while modeling Travelers' leadership behaviors. You will also be responsible for directing complex design, development, and implementation tasks based on user or system specifications, ensuring high-quality deliverables that adhere to established standards and policies. In this highly visible role, you will champion the use of artificial intelligence across the organization through education, coaching, and advocacy. You will manage resources effectively while balancing business objectives and the production of high-quality deliverables. Your expertise in the design, build, and deployment of AI-based solutions will be crucial as you partner with a diverse set of stakeholders to create modern software applications. You will lead investigation and resolution efforts for critical problems and seek opportunities to utilize technology to improve business processes. This role requires a critical-thinking mindset and the ability to triage problems, determining when AI solutions are appropriate versus traditional methods. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software engineering, particularly in the areas of artificial intelligence and cloud computing, and will be passionate about driving the adoption of AI technologies to enhance business outcomes. You will be expected to apply your knowledge of current industry trends to formulate innovative solutions for software engineering challenges, ensuring that your team is well-equipped to deliver impactful results.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of software engineers by providing technical guidance and mentorship while modeling Travelers' leadership behaviors.
• Direct complex design, development, analysis, configuration, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documenting, health monitoring/alerting, and implementation based on user or system specifications for impactful and high-visibility tasks.
• Lead investigation and resolution efforts for critical, high impact problems, defects, and incidents.
• Seek opportunities where technology can be utilized to improve the business and provide more efficient processes.
• Apply knowledge of current industry trends and techniques to formulate solutions for software engineering problems.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• 5 years of related experience; including insurance / financial services industry experience.
• Demonstrated track record implementing current technology trends and techniques in the Artificial Intelligence and Cloud Computing Spaces, including Kubernetes, Python, Docker, AWS, LLMs, etc.
• Experience working with stakeholders to identify opportunities to educate on risks and opportunities in the delivery of AI-based solutions.
• Passion for Artificial Intelligence and for driving the adoption of AI-based technologies to improve business processes and outcomes.
• Critical-thinking engineering mindset and ability to triage problems which may be best solved by AI-solutions and those where more traditional solutions may be appropriate.
• Advanced delivery skills including the ability to determine the software design strategy and methodology to be used for efforts, use automated tests, analysis, and informed feedback loops to ensure the quality and production readiness of work before release, monitor the health of work efforts and that of adjacent systems.
• Demonstrated track record of domain expertise including the ability to develop business partnerships and influence priorities by identifying solutions that are aligned with current business objective and closely follow industry trends relevant to domain, understanding how to apply them, and sharing knowledge with coworkers, specifically with Artificial Intelligence.
• Strong problem solver who utilizes data and proofs of concepts to find creative solutions to difficult problems, reflects on solutions, measuring their impact, and uses that information to ideate and optimize.
• Strong communicator who possesses the ability to describe technology concepts in ways the business can understand, document initiatives in a concise and clear manner, collaborate effectively with teammates and others regardless of role, quickly extract core issues from discussions and meetings, give and receive constructive feedback, offer help when asked, and ensure everyone has a chance to share their thoughts and are heard; an attentive and empathetic listener.
