About the position

At Moderna, we strive to make the greatest possible impact on humanity with mRNA medicines. We are seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead the teams responsible for building and operating platforms that power the manufacturing of individualized medicines to combat cancer. These platforms orchestrate complex, event-driven workflows, seamlessly integrating systems across healthcare providers, labs, manufacturing execution systems, supply chains, and distribution networks. They ensure the timely and cost-effective production and delivery of personalized therapies. Key components include a control tower for real-time insights and automated decision-making, an orchestrator to automate complex, interdependent tasks across distributed systems to ensure efficient and reliable process execution, as well as a scheduler to optimize high-capacity, make-to-order schedules for personalized medicine. In this role, you will lead cross-functional teams (both onshore and offshore), collaborate with external suppliers and healthcare providers, and guide the development and operation of these transformative platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit and Manage Top Talent: Evaluate and rigorously assess candidates for technical fit and alignment with team values, ensuring they can contribute effectively to team goals.
  • Foster Team Productivity: Create a collaborative and supportive environment to drive continuous improvement in team output, measured by metrics like sprint velocity, pre-release defect rates, and post-release incidents.
  • Code and Architecture Oversight: Conduct technical reviews of architecture, design, and code to ensure functionality, scalability, resiliency, fault tolerance, and adherence to best practices.
  • Service-Oriented Architecture Development: Lead the team in developing a modular, service-oriented architecture in compliance with GMP and regulatory requirements throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Operational Ownership: Take ownership of product operations, ensuring rapid resolution of customer-impacting issues within SLA.
  • Technical Leadership: Define scope, estimate effort, and schedule engineering work in alignment with product priorities.
  • Continuous Improvement: Champion advanced testing practices to ensure high-quality testing coverage and operational excellence in production environments.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with stakeholders across healthcare, manufacturing, supply chain, and external partners to ensure platform success in a highly regulated, fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience building, managing, and mentoring high-performing engineering teams.

  • Proficiency in front-end technologies (React, Angular) and back-end languages (Node.js, Python, Java).
  • Deep experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), databases (SQL, NoSQL), and containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools like Flux.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee operational stability at scale, including incident management.
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards, particularly in healthcare or manufacturing.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
