About the position

The Director of Software Engineering at Travelers will lead the application development for the Access and Provisioning Request System (APRS) and other automation initiatives within the Business Insurance Risk and Cyber organization. This role requires a hands-on technical leader who will oversee modernization efforts, application security, and vulnerability remediation while acting as a liaison between development teams and senior management. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software engineering, cloud technologies, and application security, along with advanced leadership and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee development and maintenance of ARPS, including modernization and potential re-write.
  • Oversee development and maintenance of additional automation efforts in support of BI Risk and Cyber organization.
  • Take point on initiatives such as vulnerability remediation and secrets management across Business Insurance Technology organization; track results, provide metrics, and coordinate resolution as necessary.
  • Act as a liaison between the development team and senior management; ensure effective communication between stakeholders, clients, and team members.
  • Identify and lead opportunities to improve application security across Business Insurance.
  • Partner with Enterprise Cyber group to address any concerns with third parties we interface with.
  • Coordinate with application areas as new tools and processes such as penetration testing are introduced.
  • Serve as HR manager for a team of three software engineers; hire and train staff as necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or its equivalent in work experience.
  • Three years of programming/development experience.
  • Experience as a software engineer using modern languages, frameworks, and development environments.
  • Experience with cloud technologies such as AWS.
  • Familiarity with MITRE ATT&CK, OWASP, and NIST frameworks.
  • Background in application security including areas such as cloud security, IAM, and security testing.
  • Experience overseeing software development initiatives and managing production applications.
  • The ability to plan, coordinate, and track projects, manage teams, deadlines, and budgets.
  • Strong problem-solving skills utilizing data and proofs of concepts.

  • Advanced delivery skills including the ability to determine the software design strategy and methodology to be used for efforts.
  • Demonstrated track record of domain expertise including the ability to develop business partnerships and influence priorities.
