In the role of Director of Tax Operations, you will be a key leader in building the operational backbone of our tax department. This position is critical for driving efficiencies and standardization in both US and international tax compliance and reporting. You will oversee the preparation of federal, state, and international tax reporting and compliance functions, ensuring that our tax operations align with the evolving regulatory landscape. The Tax Operations team is also responsible for preparing all quarterly and annual tax accounting for financial and SEC reporting purposes, making this role integral to our financial integrity and compliance. Your responsibilities will include managing the consolidated tax provision, leading the tax team through the provision process, and maintaining relationships with external auditors for US GAAP audits. You will also focus on improving standardization and automation in the US tax compliance process, ensuring compliance with Sarbanes Oxley requirements, and championing operational excellence through process improvements and technology enhancements. Additionally, you will build and manage a global tax operations function, develop a high-performing team, and collaborate with various stakeholders across the organization to integrate tax as a business partner. This role requires a proactive approach to tracking US tax legislative developments and providing strategic advice to management on potential impacts to Circle.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the consolidated tax provision, quarterly filings, and other tax-related financial statements in compliance with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Lead and mentor the tax team in completing the provision process from planning and forecasting through to calculations, recording, analysis, and reporting.
  • Manage external auditor relationships for US GAAP audit of income taxes.
  • Oversee the delivery of all US income tax reporting including federal, state, and US international tax returns.
  • Improve standardization and automation in the US tax compliance process and drive continuous process improvements to streamline the global tax accounting process.
  • Ensure compliance with Sarbanes Oxley requirements regarding processes, documentation, and related systems.
  • Ensure analytics and accuracy of the reported effective tax rate components as well as the forecasted effective tax rate and cash taxes globally.
  • Champion operational excellence through process improvement, leveraging best practices, and promoting automation and technology to enhance efficiency and scalability.
  • Build and manage a global tax operations function with an emphasis on establishing efficient processes informed by multinational corporate experience and best practices.
  • Develop and motivate a team that will excel in a fast-moving, hyper-growth setting.
  • Build key multistakeholder relationships with Accounting, Finance, Operations, and Business teams to ensure integration of Tax as a business partner.
  • Contribute to quarterly reporting to the Audit Committee in Board of Director meetings.
  • Track US tax legislative developments and provide financial risk and operational advice to management on any impacts to Circle.
  • Drive key Tax contributions to the design and implementation of the future ERP system and manage the tax software procurement process.
  • Automate recurring calculations and evaluate and implement tax technology tools.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of experience in global corporate tax, including public accounting experience.
  • At least 5+ years of managing a team in a public company setting or corporate tax department.
  • Demonstrated expertise in accounting for income tax issues and US GAAP.
  • Fluency with various tax calculations and compliance software; proficiency with OneSource Provision or similar tools within Oracle ERP system environment is a plus.
  • Familiarity with international tax and cross-border differences.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain tax concepts to cross-functional and management teams.
  • Experience with M&A strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting or finance; CPA preferred.
  • Experience in financial services or fintech industries preferred.
