About the position

The Director, Track Operations at Michigan International Speedway is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing all track and facility operations activities. This position requires close collaboration with the Track President and the Midwest Region's VP of Operations to ensure the smooth functioning of the speedway, which is not only a racing venue but also a host for various events throughout the year. The Director will establish programs and standards to maintain the racing surface, facilities, grounds, infrastructure, and equipment, ensuring that the property is event-ready at all times. In addition to operational oversight, the Director will create and manage the budget for operations, facilities, and maintenance teams, developing a cost-effective operating plan that adapts to the changing needs of the business. This role also involves hiring, developing, and leading a diverse team of full-time, part-time, seasonal, and event staff, fostering positive relationships with industry stakeholders, vendors, and community partners. The Director will serve as the primary contact for NASCAR's competition and track services teams, ensuring compliance with NASCAR event standards and health and safety regulations. The position demands a strong technical knowledge of various trades, including plumbing, electrical, AV, and HVAC, to effectively diagnose problems and oversee maintenance work. The Director will also be responsible for negotiating bids from third-party vendors, leading construction and improvement projects, and ensuring adherence to all laws, codes, and safety regulations. This role requires a proactive approach to operational needs, with the ability to present recommendations to senior leadership and manage event setups and teardowns efficiently. Overall, the Director, Track Operations plays a crucial role in maintaining the high standards of Michigan International Speedway, ensuring that it remains a premier destination for racing and events.

Responsibilities

  • Establish programs and standards for the upkeep of the racing surface, facilities, grounds, infrastructure, and equipment.
  • Create and manage the operations, facilities, and maintenance teams' budget.
  • Work with the Track President to manage the track capital budget and oversee capital projects.
  • Hire, develop, lead, and manage the track operations, facilities, and maintenance teams.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff, industry stakeholders, vendors, and community partners.
  • Continuously assess operational needs and present recommendations to the Track President and other leadership.
  • Serve as the primary track contact for NASCAR's competition and track services teams.
  • Ensure compliance with health codes, safety training, and environmental regulations.
  • Demonstrate technical knowledge of various trades to diagnose problems and determine solutions.
  • Request, receive, review, and negotiate bids from third-party vendors.
  • Lead and oversee construction and improvement projects.
  • Ensure compliance with laws, codes, ordinances, and safety procedures.
  • Prepare contracts with the assistance of the NASCAR legal team.
  • Oversee all event setup, teardown, and property restoration.
  • Work with the security team to schedule property deliveries and vendor work.
  • Support other events in the Midwest Region as needed.
  • Serve as the primary onsite contact for special events and be on-call for facility emergencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least five years of managerial experience in facility operations and/or event production.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, including Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience preparing facilities for large-scale public and private events.
  • Knowledge and experience in planning, executing, managing, and controlling budgets.
  • Technical knowledge of various trades (plumbing, electrical, AV, HVAC, etc.) is a plus.
  • Ability to effectively present information to management and prospects in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to collaborate with employees at all levels across the organization.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, problem-solving abilities, and leadership skills.
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, including first aid and applicable safety standards for public facilities.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and implement immediate corrective action.
