About the position

The Director of Web Communications at Texas Woman's University (TWU) is a pivotal role responsible for managing the university's web presence and ensuring that it aligns with the institution's strategic objectives. This position oversees the TWU Web Team and is tasked with the governance of the university's website content, which is crucial for maintaining the institution's reputation and brand positioning. The Director will lead initiatives related to constituency communications, student recruitment, and other externally focused communications that enhance the university's engagement with the public and its community. In this role, the Director will be responsible for the design, creation, and maintenance of the university's public website, which serves as a vital platform for information dissemination and branding. The position also involves managing relationships with external vendors that provide products and services essential for the website's maintenance and enhancement. The Director will work under general supervision, with performance evaluations based on the effective operation of the administrative function and adherence to university policies and procedures. The Director will supervise a team that includes the Assistant Director of Web Administration, the Manager of Web Communications, and the Senior Web Design Specialist. This leadership role requires a strategic vision for the university's online presence, ensuring that the website meets compliance standards, accessibility requirements, and best practices in web design and content management. The Director will also be responsible for analyzing website usage data and ensuring that the site remains a reliable resource for both the university community and the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the Web Team.
  • Manages services and products provided by external vendors required to manage, maintain, and enhance the university website.
  • Develops information architecture of the university website.
  • Conceptualizes, designs, and maintains the Texas Woman's University home pages for the Denton, Dallas, and Houston campuses.
  • Conceptualizes, designs, and maintains other key university web pages for the Denton, Dallas, and Houston Campuses, including those that support the chancellor's and other administrative initiatives, recruitment and retention activities, the university events calendar, board of regents web pages, and general information pages.
  • Manages configuration for university site analytics (Google Analytics) and analyzes data on website usage and traffic patterns.
  • Monitors the site to ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations, local policies, and copyright issues.
  • Ensures accessibility standards are maintained and serves as the university contact for EIR process and guidelines.
  • Oversees standards for search engine optimization (SEO).
  • Maintains standards for WCAG 2.x AA (Section 508) compliance.
  • Provides guidance to university departments on best practices for their websites and social media.
  • Works on call 24/7 to publish emergency messages on university websites.
  • Reviews user email about the website, and either responds to or refers email as indicated, ensuring that referred emails receive timely responses.
  • Establishes job standards for subordinate staff and effectively evaluates staff under charge.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in web development, web engineering, communications, marketing, multimedia, or related field required; Master's preferred.
  • Ten years' experience and demonstrated proficiency in a position requiring comparable skills and work performance.
  • Knowledge of web development environments (PHP, ASP, ASP.net), web server management (Apache, Tomcat, IIS), and database-driven systems (MySQL).
  • Knowledge of web content management systems (Terminalfour, DNN).
  • Knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript.
  • Knowledge of graphic/web design principles.
  • Ability to write and edit website copy with an emphasis on marketing communication.
  • Ability to create graphics and edit photos for use on websites.
  • Working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, or other comparable graphics applications.
  • Knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO) techniques.
  • Knowledge of website accessibility (Section 508/WCAG 2.x AA standards).
  • Knowledge of website performance techniques.
  • Knowledge of Google Analytics (Universal Analytics, GA4).
  • Knowledge of Siteimprove or comparable website monitoring tool.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate and work with diverse individuals.
  • Ability to work either in a team environment or independently.
  • Ability to take direction.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
