About the position

The Director of Wholesale Marketing at Tucson Electric Power (TEP) is responsible for overseeing the trading and scheduling operations of wholesale marketing for TEP, UNS Electric (UNSE), and UNS Gas (UNSG). This role involves managing complex power agreements, credit and risk management procedures, and wholesale transmission planning requirements. The Director will develop strategies related to power procurement, natural gas transportation, and wholesale sales opportunities, ensuring that the company maintains an adequate and reliable energy supply at the lowest reasonable cost. The position requires extensive knowledge of wholesale power markets, natural gas pipeline operations, and regional transmission operations that impact the company's resource portfolios. The Director will maintain strategic business relationships with wholesale market participants to effectively develop future power procurement and energy sale opportunities. Additionally, the role involves preparing and presenting comprehensive reports and presentations of wholesale marketing activities to senior management, utility regulators, and customers. In this leadership position, the Director will lead strategic planning activities related to resource procurement and natural gas transportation, manage complex energy transaction agreements, and provide input into energy risk management policies. The role also requires strong analytical and computer modeling skills to analyze fuel supply options and wholesale power transactions. The Director will work closely with other departments on major company-wide efforts, such as rate cases and regulatory filings, while ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Wholesale Marketing trading & scheduling operations for TEP, UNSE, and UNSG.
  • Manage complex power agreements, credit and risk management procedures, and wholesale transmission planning requirements.
  • Develop strategies related to power procurement, natural gas transportation, and wholesale sales opportunities.
  • Maintain strategic business relationships with wholesale market participants.
  • Prepare and present reports and presentations of wholesale marketing activities for senior management, utility regulators, and customers.
  • Lead strategic planning activities in Wholesale Marketing related to resource procurement and natural gas transportation.
  • Manage complex energy transaction agreements and long-term natural gas transportation agreements.
  • Provide input into energy risk management policies for TEP, UNSE, and UNSG.
  • Work with other departments in support of major company-wide efforts, such as rate cases and regulatory filings.
  • Evaluate scenarios to position the Company effectively against future business conditions.

Requirements

  • 10 or more years of relevant wholesale marketing, energy trading, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Economics, Finance, Accounting, or related field(s), or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated utility business experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of economic and technical principles of electrical generation and transmission systems.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and computer skills.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of complex energy contracts.
  • Ability to influence and lead at all levels of the organization.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with the California ISO (CAISO) Energy Imbalance Market (EIM).
  • Familiarity with Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) compliance requirements.
