About the position

The Director of the Creative Achievement and Research Administration Team (CARAT) at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) is responsible for leading and overseeing the operations of a unit that supports faculty in research and creative achievement. This role involves managing a team, ensuring compliance with regulations, and collaborating with Principal Investigators to facilitate successful grant and fellowship activities. The Director will set strategic goals, manage an annual budget, and promote a positive work environment while providing guidance and mentorship to staff.

Responsibilities

  • Set objectives and goals for CARAT in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Research and Creative Achievement.
  • Lead and supervise CARAT staff, including recruitment, training, and performance management.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and UMBC policies regarding research administration.
  • Provide pre-and post-award administration support for Principal Investigators (PIs).
  • Oversee CARAT operations and implement continuous improvement processes.
  • Plan and implement grant and fellowship training for CAHSS faculty.
  • Prepare annual reports on sponsored research trends and financial analyses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a business field.
  • Six years of relevant experience in research administration or grants management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of major governmental funders and grant documents.
  • Demonstrated competency in management responsibilities such as strategic planning and financial stewardship.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Familiarity with foundations, non-profits, and private funders.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Financial and Human Resources software.
  • Three plus years of successful staff management and supervisory experience.
  • Possession of a Certified Research Administrator (CRA) credential.
