About the position

The Disability Insurance Services Representative plays a crucial role in determining claimant eligibility for the State Disability Insurance (SDI) Program benefits. This position involves conducting interviews, processing claims, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations while providing excellent customer service. The representative may also develop training programs and act as an expert witness in appeals, contributing to the integrity and efficiency of the DI Branch.

Responsibilities

  • Determine claimant eligibility for State Disability Insurance (SDI) Program benefits including Disability Insurance, Paid Family Leave, and Nonindustrial Disability.
  • Conduct fact-finding interviews and respond to inquiries regarding claims.
  • Perform claim processing activities in accordance with laws, regulations, rules, and policies.
  • Provide prompt, accurate, and courteous customer service to claimants.
  • Develop and provide training on the application of laws, regulations, and policies related to SDI.
  • Record and maintain overpayment documents in accordance with current policies and procedures.
  • Process overpayments and conduct follow-up collection actions for both claimant and third-party overpayments.
  • Identify and report any suspected fraudulent claims and/or activities.
  • Act as an expert witness before the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board if required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles of the SDI Branch programs.
  • Ability to conduct interviews and process claims accurately and efficiently.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively with claimants.
  • Understanding of laws and regulations related to disability insurance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in training or developing training materials.
  • Familiarity with overpayment policies and procedures.
  • Previous experience in a customer service role within a government agency.
