About the position

The Disability Services Access Case Manager, Visual Impairment Specialist plays a crucial role in fostering an accessible environment for students with disabilities at LSU. Reporting to the Director of Disability Services, this position involves advising students with disabilities, evaluating documentation for those with low vision and blindness, and determining necessary accommodations and services. The role also includes advocacy, coordination of essential services, and leadership in expanding outreach and revising departmental policies to enhance student support.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret disability-related documentation to determine eligibility for services and accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Serve as an advocate and liaison between students and campus departments to promote participation in university programs.
  • Provide orientation mobility training to students and coordinate essential services to ensure high standards of support.
  • Assist with E-text, reader software, and the provision of text access, including brailling tests and educational handouts.
  • Lead the creation and implementation of a plan to expand outreach and provisions for access for students with low vision and blindness.
  • Assist in examining and revising departmental policies and practices to create more efficient and user-friendly processes.
  • Assist the Director in tracking statistics and performing assessments of programs and activities for student advocacy and guidance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Specific training in working with persons with low vision and blindness.
  • Access Technology Experience and Orientation Mobility experience.
  • Experience with E-text, PDF remediation, reader software, and Braille.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Counseling, or a directly related field.
  • Experience with Access Technology Consultations, reader software, PDF remediation, and Case management.
  • Working knowledge of Braille/Brailling experience.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience working with adolescents and/or adults with disabilities, particularly students with low vision and blindness.
  • Certification: Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS)
