About the position

The Disease Intervention Specialist I (DIS) is a public health professional responsible for investigating and intervening in the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV. This role involves client-centered interviewing, partner services facilitation, contact tracing, and collaboration with medical providers to ensure patient evaluation and treatment. The DIS I focuses on gonorrhea casework, conducting complex investigations and contributing to program support activities, including training new DIS staff and participating in community outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct public health investigations involving persons diagnosed with or exposed to reportable STDs, including HIV.
  • Interview clients diagnosed with STDs or HIV to provide education and elicit information for testing and treatment of others at risk.
  • Document surveillance data and investigative activities in accordance with program standards.
  • Analyze medical history and laboratory test results to classify investigations and ensure appropriate medical care.
  • Analyze sexual, social, medical, and epidemiological data to determine source/spread relationships and identify exposure gaps.
  • Conduct local field work to locate and motivate persons diagnosed with or at risk of infection to seek medical examination and treatment.
  • Perform phlebotomy and facilitate specimen collection for laboratory testing.
  • Collaborate with local health departments, community organizations, and health systems to promote public health practices.
  • Attend and participate in meetings and training activities to maintain proficiency.
  • Participate in community outreach activities, including screening events and health fairs.
  • Participate in public health emergency preparedness exercises and response as directed.
  • Participate in community service events totaling a minimum of eight hours annually.

Requirements

  • Completion of a high school degree required.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a service-focused industry required.
  • Valid Indiana driver's license and reliable automobile with insurance required.
  • Public health experience, such as contact tracing, preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public health investigations.
  • Knowledge of STD/HIV fundamentals and disease prevention strategies.
