About the position

The Dispatcher at Michigan Technological University is responsible for operating the switchboard and providing dispatch services for the Department of Public Safety and Police Services. This role involves answering emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching law enforcement units, and maintaining communication with various agencies. The Dispatcher plays a critical role in ensuring public safety by managing calls for service and monitoring various safety systems.

Responsibilities

• Answers incoming emergency and non-emergency telephone lines from the public and refers callers to the appropriate department.
• Dispatches law enforcement units to respond to incidents reported by the public, prioritizing calls as necessary.
• Enters calls for service into the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to ensure appropriate responses.
• Maintains records of officers' locations and activities by entering calls initiated by field units into CAD.
• Monitors and operates public safety radio systems and queries various databases for information.
• Enters information into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and confirms validity for other agencies.
• Monitors alarm systems and maintains records of lost and found items.
• Performs data entry using the BANNER system and assists customers in a friendly manner.
• Tests emergency systems and notifies personnel if any are inoperative.
• Completes application for Michigan Notary and performs related duties.
• May exercise functional supervision over support staff or student assistants.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Four years of office/clerical experience.
• Four years of experience using personal computers and basic software packages.
