About the position

As a Distinguished Engineer at Capital One, you will be part of a community of technical experts focused on defining the future of banking in the cloud. This role involves driving innovation, optimizing business outcomes, and promoting a culture of engineering excellence. You will lead the development of next-generation technology solutions, mentor internal talent, and actively recruit to build a strong technical community. Your expertise will be sought across the organization, and you will be responsible for architecting a modernized data ecosystem for Capital One's credit card core.

• Decompose complex problems into practical and operational solutions
• Ensure the quality of technical design and implementation
• Serve as an authoritative expert on non-functional system characteristics, such as performance, scalability and operability
• Continue learning and injecting advanced technical knowledge into our community
• Handle several projects simultaneously, balancing your time to maximize impact
• Act as a role model and mentor within the tech community, helping to coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know-how of our engineering and product community
• Involved with products software development lifecycle to have a hands-on impact
• Build awareness, increase knowledge and drive adoption of modern technologies, sharing consumer and engineering benefits to gain buy-in
• Effectively communicate with and influence key stakeholders across the enterprise, at all levels of the organization
• Operate as a trusted advisor for a specific technology, platform or capability domain, helping to shape use cases and implementation in a unified manner
• Lead the way in creating next-generation talent for Tech, mentoring internal talent and actively recruiting external talent to bolster Capital One's Tech talent

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree
• At least 7 years of data architecture or enterprise architecture experience
• At least 5 years of database management, Data Lake or data warehouse experience
• At least 5 years of public cloud experience (AWS, Microsoft, Azure, Google Cloud)
• At least 2 years of experience building real-time data products and data streaming applications

Nice-to-haves

• Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field
• 3+ years of architecting experience with AWS components such as S3, Glue, Aurora Global, DynamoDB, Kinesis, Lambda, Glacier etc
• 3+ years of experience with Big Data components such as AVRO, Parquet, Iceberg, Hudi, Spark, Kafka, Flink etc
• Experience with developing strategy and implementing target architectures
• 7+ years experience architecting and delivering data systems or platforms
• 7+ years of data governance, data access, data quality, data lineage, data monitoring, and data security controls experience
• 5+ years of experience developing applications on Python, Java, Scala or SQL
• 3+ years of experience in building highly resilient distributed data systems
• 3+ years in data engineering including experience in distributed data pipelines
