About the position

The Distinguished Engineer at GEICO will play a pivotal role in transforming the insurance business by building a Payments Platform from the ground up. This position focuses on engineering excellence, fostering a culture of psychological safety, and continuous improvement. The engineer will lead the strategy and execution of a technical roadmap aimed at enhancing product delivery and unlocking new engineering capabilities, while also mentoring team members and influencing leadership across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Define the engineering direction and roadmap for the new Payments Platform that aligns with business goals.
  • Lead the development of the Payments Platform, ensuring security, resilience, compliance, and correctness.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Maintain high standards for technical decision-making and engineering artifacts, such as code and design documents.
  • Stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies, evaluating their potential impact on payments engineering and making recommendations for adoption.
  • Triage and resolve service disruptions, and build industry-standard mechanisms for prevention and self-healing.
  • Influence and educate leadership at all levels.

Requirements

  • Deep hands-on experience in full stack system design and implementation of payments and finance systems.
  • Proven ability for system architecture and influencing engineering direction and product roadmap.
  • Hands-on experience building platforms from the ground up using resiliency patterns, observability, continuous delivery, and infrastructure as code.
  • Fluency and specialization with at least two modern languages such as GO, Java, Python, or C#, including object-oriented design.
  • Fluency with RESTful Web Services and Event Driven Architectures.
  • Experience with cloud computing tooling across the software development life cycle, with fluency in devops, observability, telemetry, and test automation.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, focusing on delivering results and driving continuous improvement.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and all levels of leadership.
  • Experience with Finance, Billing, and Payment platforms preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with CNCF frameworks in cloud-native systems.
