About the position

The Office of the District Attorney, Prosecutorial District 7, is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of District Attorney Legal Assistant. This role is essential in providing legal support services to the prosecutors in the Hertford County office. The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks that are crucial to the functioning of the office and the support of legal proceedings. Duties include answering phones, assisting the public, typing correspondence, preparing legal documents, and organizing files. Additionally, the legal assistant will play a vital role in assisting victims and witnesses in understanding and preparing for court appearances. This includes gathering information that aids in the prosecution of cases and performing other duties as assigned by the prosecutors. The position requires a strong understanding of the court system and procedures, as well as legal terminology. The legal assistant must possess skills in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, and should be able to type accurately at a speed of 35-40 words per minute. The ability to manage a multi-line telephone system is also essential. Furthermore, the role demands excellent interpersonal skills, as the legal assistant will need to interview victims and witnesses to elicit necessary information, coordinate the daily operations of the victim and witness program, and ensure that victims and witnesses are present in the courtroom when required. Effective communication, both orally and in writing, with individuals from diverse backgrounds is crucial, as is the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement officers, officials from related agencies, and the general public. The legal assistant must also be capable of handling stressful situations calmly and professionally.

Responsibilities

  • Skill in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to accurately type at a speed of 35-40 wpm.
  • Experience in answering a multi-line telephone system.
  • Ability to interview victims and witnesses effectively.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
