About The Position

The Eighth Judicial District Court is seeking qualified candidates for the District/Family Courtroom Clerk I/II position. This role is essential for ensuring that all case files, documentation, and participants are organized for efficient courtroom operations. The clerk acts as a liaison between the court and participants, maintaining records of court proceedings and following up as required. The position offers a pathway for advancement from Clerk I to Clerk II based on experience and proficiency.

Requirements

  • District/Family Courtroom Clerk I: Equivalent to graduation from high school, AND two years of full-time clerical or office support experience, one year of which is in a legal or court setting.
  • Must type at a net rate of 50 words per minute and have a verifiable certification in shorthand/speedwriting, able to take dictation by hand at a net rate of 70 words per minute and transcribe it accurately.
  • District/Family Courtroom Clerk II: One year of full-time experience in recording actions and assisting courtroom activities in a District, Family, or similar court setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a legal or court setting is preferred.
  • Certification in shorthand/speedwriting at the time of application for Clerk II position.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and distributes court calendars; ensures that all files, documents, evidence, and other materials are available and organized prior to the beginning of court sessions.
  • Attends court, administers oaths, swears in juries, and maintains audio, video, and manual records of actions taken.
  • Prepares minute orders summarizing proceedings and actions taken during court sessions.
  • Reviews orders and legal documents for accuracy and compliance with court proceedings; maintains a tracking system for these documents.
  • Maintains chain of evidence and ensures security of all property, files, and documents; marks exhibits as required.
  • Sets cases for hearing, considering participant schedules and required deadlines; maintains current records on case status.
  • Responds to inquiries and provides factual information regarding court proceedings to attorneys, court officials, and the public.
  • Maintains liaison with attorneys; assigns appointments and ensures attorneys are notified.
  • Composes correspondence and other written materials from instructions or notes; types or word processes various materials.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service by offering suggestions and participating as an active team member.
  • May direct the work of and instruct others in court procedures.
  • Maintains accurate records and files; may prepare periodic or special reports related to work performed.
