About the position

The District Floating Head Custodian at West Ada School District is responsible for supervising and performing routine custodial work in secondary school facilities. This role involves overseeing the cleaning and maintenance of school buildings and grounds, ensuring a safe and clean environment for students and staff. The Head Custodian will work under the direct supervision of the Custodial Supervisor and will also take direction from the building principal and teachers, fostering a collaborative team approach. This position is distinguished from the Head Custodian/Elementary role by the complexity of tasks, the size of the facility, and the variety of specialized classrooms such as science labs, art rooms, and gymnasiums. The Head Custodian will supervise the Night Supervisor and other custodial staff, ensuring that all cleaning and maintenance tasks are scheduled and executed efficiently. The primary duties include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and sanitizing various areas within the school, including classrooms, restrooms, and common areas. The Head Custodian is also responsible for maintaining supply levels, performing minor maintenance tasks, and ensuring the grounds are kept clean and safe. This role requires the use of electrically powered cleaning equipment and may involve outdoor work in various weather conditions. The Head Custodian must be available for on-call duties after regular hours to respond to emergencies, ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the school environment at all times.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and perform routine custodial, maintenance, cleaning, and grounds keeping tasks in secondary school buildings and grounds.
• Schedule and monitor building cleaning and maintenance tasks, providing direction to custodial staff members.
• Prepare work orders for repairs and employee work schedules.
• Sweep and mop floors, including restrooms, classrooms, hallways, and other areas.
• Vacuum carpeted floors and maintain floor surfaces through stripping, waxing, and shampooing as needed.
• Dust and wipe off surfaces, including chalkboards and whiteboards.
• Clean and sanitize restroom areas, maintaining supply levels in restrooms.
• Wash walls, windows, and surface areas; empty and clean trash containers.
• Clean light fixtures, dust air vents, and change air filters as necessary.
• Perform minor maintenance tasks, including changing light bulbs and minor plumbing repairs.
• Maintain grounds by picking up litter, mowing grass, and performing snow removal duties.
• Lock and unlock buildings, checking security measures to prevent vandalism.
• Assist in moving and setting up furniture and equipment for special events.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalency.
• Two years of school custodial experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division at the 8th-grade level.
• Ability to read, write, and comprehend English at the 8th-grade level.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with groundskeeping and landscaping tasks.
• Supervisory experience in a custodial or maintenance role.
