About the position

The District Geotechnical Materials Engineer is responsible for managing resources within the Department of Transportation to deliver essential services related to geotechnical engineering. This role involves supervising employees, ensuring quality service delivery, and performing engineering analyses to optimize material applications and foundation designs. The engineer will also oversee consultant contracts and provide technical support to customers, ensuring compliance with regulations and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the resources of the Department to deliver required services.
  • Supervise employees, focusing on communication, motivation, training, and evaluation.
  • Perform engineering analysis to determine the best application of materials.
  • Specify performance requirements and testing/inspection requirements for materials.
  • Evaluate project/process performance and recommend improvements.
  • Perform engineering analysis of in-place conditions and engineer solutions as necessary.
  • Design foundations and geotechnical solutions to support infrastructure.
  • Analyze materials data for compliance and correct errors in a timely manner.
  • Provide materials-related technical support and guidance to customers.
  • Review Quality Control plans and provide constructive feedback.
  • Develop and manage consultant contracts, ensuring quality and timeliness of work.
  • Support consultant contracts and review their work efforts.

Requirements

  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer by the State of Florida Board of Professional Engineers.
  • Knowledge of geotechnical engineering concepts, terminology, and analytical techniques.
  • Skill in using engineering tools, equipment, and instruments.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret engineering data and solve related problems.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Strong communication skills for conveying engineering information effectively.
  • Ability to manage an engineering program and assess budgetary needs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in supervising engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with the budgetary process in a governmental context.
  • Knowledge of construction and operational principles.
