About the position

The District Veterinary Medical Officer position is located in the Office of Field Operations, Philadelphia District, and serves as the primary contact for veterinary duties related to food safety, animal welfare, and disease surveillance. This role involves conducting inspections, implementing guidelines, and fostering relationships with stakeholders to ensure compliance with veterinary medical practices.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and analyze guidelines and regulations.
  • Implement guidelines, policies, and regulations to provide personnel support.
  • Conduct research and investigations to make judgments and recommendations.
  • Foster working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Communicate guidelines and processes to plant personnel.
  • Draft recommendations, reports, and guidance documents.
  • Apply veterinary medical concepts, principles, and practices.
  • Perform routine onsite humane handling and good commercial practices.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Completion of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • One year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level or equivalent, demonstrating the ability to perform veterinary medical activities.
  • Knowledge of veterinary medical concepts, scientific literature, and food safety issues.
  • Experience in coordinating veterinary medical policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret and apply inspection program rules and regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public health or food safety programs.
  • Familiarity with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles.
  • Experience in animal welfare practices.
