About the position
The Correctional Officer Trainee position at the Illinois Department of Corrections involves receiving formalized and on-the-job training in security and custodial duties for a period not to exceed three months. Trainees will undergo extensive training, including firearms training, and will be assigned to various correctional facilities across the state. Successful candidates will participate in a formal ceremony upon completion of their training and will be sworn to the Oath of Office.
Responsibilities
- Receives eight weeks of formalized pre-service security training at the Illinois Corrections Training Academy including firearms training.
- Receives on-the-job training under immediate supervision of a qualified correctional employee.
- Assigned each work week to another correctional employee to assist in various duties such as running lines, yard, dining room, housing units, and perimeter patrol.
- Travels using a state-issued vehicle to complete assignments.
- Receives one week orientation at the facility.
- Given formal training in housing unit work, report writing, out-count work, yard work, and security procedures.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Requirements
- Completion of four years of high school or equivalent education.
- Elementary knowledge of resident behavior problems.
- Completion of a pre-service security training course during the trainee period.
- Successful completion of a firearms training course during the trainee period.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel statewide.
- Ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
