About the position

The Domestic Violence Counselor is responsible for providing individual and group counseling services to victims of domestic violence and their families in Tuscaloosa and surrounding areas. This role involves planning, developing, and implementing counseling components, as well as advocating for clients and maintaining records. The counselor will also facilitate group sessions and provide outreach services to meet the needs of the client population.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assessment and counseling services to victims of domestic violence and their families/significant others.
  • Advocate for clients with community resource providers as needed.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with community agencies to meet client needs.
  • Facilitate group sessions on topics relevant to domestic violence victims.
  • Distribute informational materials for victims.
  • Maintain adequate records and compile data as required by agency needs or funding sources.
  • Communicate program and administrative issues to the supervisor.
  • Develop and implement new services or programs when identified.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, marriage & family therapy, or a related field required.
  • Professional license (ALC, LPC, LCSW, LMFT, etc.) or in process of attaining licensure.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate good non-judgmental listening skills.
  • Knowledge of the issues and dynamics of sexual assault and domestic violence.
