About the position

The License Specialist II position at the Texas Department of Public Safety involves performing moderately complex licensing and permitting work in a Regional Operations Field office. The role includes reviewing applications, ensuring compliance with regulations, and interacting with the public to provide information about driver licensing procedures. The position requires working extended hours and may involve weekend work, as well as the use of body-worn cameras during work hours.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and review license and permit applications.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable policies, administrative codes, and statutes.
  • Communicate with external and internal customers regarding licensing procedures.
  • Administer written and visual tests for applicants.
  • Prepare application forms and collect license application fees.
  • Answer general information questions related to driver license laws and procedures.
  • Conduct physical checks of applicants' driving capabilities and eyesight.
  • Inspect motor vehicles for safety prior to road tests.
  • Issue licenses and permits and collect appropriate fees.
  • Input applications and payments into computer systems.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one year of general office, volunteer, or customer service experience.
  • Valid driver license required; Texas license must be obtained within specified time if moving to Texas.
  • Certification as a Commercial Knowledge Examiner (CCKE) required within the first six months of employment.
  • Working knowledge of TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, and policies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Cash handling experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
