The License Specialist II position at the Texas Department of Public Safety involves performing licensing and permitting work in a Regional Operations Field office. The role includes reviewing applications, ensuring compliance with regulations, and interacting with the public to provide information about driver licensing procedures. Responsibilities

  • Meet and deal with the general public in a professional manner; answer questions regarding driver licenses and identification cards.
  • Determine the legal needs and requirements of applicants; screen application forms for qualification.
  • Perform basic checks of applicants' physical driving capabilities and refer to specialists if necessary.
  • Inspect motor vehicles for safety prior to road tests; verify financial responsibility and registration.
  • Certify drivers as reasonable risks or disapprove them as unreasonable risks.
  • Make inquiries to determine applicants' eligibility for licensing using various external systems.
  • Issue licenses and permits, collect fees, and ensure accountability for received funds.
  • Check accuracy of applications and documents; input data into computer systems.
  • Advise applicants of suspensions, cancellations, and revocations; explain how to qualify.
  • Administer written and oral tests to applicants; schedule driving tests and operate testing machines.
  • Conduct comprehensive examinations to determine qualifications; observe applicants during road tests.
  • Provide information and testimony for the Department in hearings as necessary.
  • Assist the public and agency staff with licensing and permit requirements; answer questions about processes.
  • Train co-workers on the job as needed.
  • Administer road skills examinations; must have a valid Texas driver license to perform this duty.
  • Travel to other Driver License Offices for training or work as required.
  • Prepare daily bookkeeping reports and maintain office equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area; may require minor repairs to testing devices.
  • Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours; perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of general office, volunteer, or customer service experience; cash handling experience preferred.
  • Valid driver license required; Texas license must be obtained within specified time if moving to Texas.
  • Certification as a Commercial Knowledge Examiner required within the first six months of employment.
  • Working knowledge of TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, and policies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with customers.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize tasks in a changing environment.
  • Presentation and communication skills to deliver clear information to various audiences.
  • Ability to access and present relevant information efficiently.
  • Analytical reasoning skills to examine data and identify trends.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information responsibly.
  • Commitment to safety standards and practices.
