About the position

The Texas Department of Public Safety is seeking a Temporary License Specialist II for the Regulatory Operations division in Edinburg, TX. This position is responsible for performing moderately complex licensing and permitting work, which includes receiving and reviewing applications for driver licenses and permits, ensuring compliance with applicable policies, administrative codes, and statutes. The specialist will communicate with both external and internal customers, providing information and assistance regarding driver license laws and procedures, safety responsibility laws, and other services available through the Department and state agencies. The role requires the administration of driver license tests and responding to inquiries from the public, all while working under general supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment. The position is temporary and will conclude on August 31, 2025, or until funding is depleted. The work schedule is full-time, with standard hours of 40 per week, and may require extended hours, beginning as early as 7:00 AM and ending as late as 8:00 PM. Weekend work may also be required on occasion. Applicants must provide a complete job history in their applications, as incomplete submissions may lead to rejection. The specialist will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of applications, collecting fees, issuing licenses, and maintaining records. Additionally, the role may involve minor repairs to office equipment and preparing the work area for daily activities. Regular attendance and adherence to agency leave policies are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and review license and permit applications, ensuring compliance with applicable policies and regulations.
  • Communicate with the public regarding driver license laws, procedures, and other Department services.
  • Administer driver license tests and respond to inquiries from the general public.
  • Input applications and payments into appropriate computer systems and ensure accountability for collected fees.
  • Verify the accuracy of documents and ensure source data is correctly input into state records.
  • Provide administrative assistance related to licensing and permit requirements to the public and agency staff.
  • Approve applications for licenses and permits based on state regulations and agency policies.
  • May administer road skills examinations and schedule applicants for driving tests.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and prepare testing devices for daily use.
  • Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent, or currently enrolled in high school.
  • Minimum of one year of general office, volunteer, or customer service experience; cash handling experience preferred.
  • Valid Texas driver license required, or must obtain one within specified time frames after moving to Texas.
  • Working knowledge of TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, and policies related to driver licensing.
  • Ability to exercise poise, tact, and diplomacy in professional interactions with customers.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Effective communication skills for delivering presentations and answering inquiries.
  • Analytical reasoning skills with attention to detail for examining data and identifying trends.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new software systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual skills, particularly in Spanish, to assist non-English speaking applicants.
